Passing the Night at the Foot of Five-Pines Mountain in the House of the Widow Ao

I spent the night at the foot of Five-Pines Mountain,

silent, solitary place; at first

there seemed no welcome there.

This Autumn’s hard for the villagers;

I hear a neighbor woman in the cold

pounding the last grains from the husks,

as we kneel to eat the water weed my hostess calls “our rice”:

moon’s glorious light from the empty white bowl.

And I’m ashamed I can never repay

this kindness, gentle mother.

Three deep bows will never make a meal.
